Bobcats and Otters and Bears

We went to the Asheville Nature Center yesterday with Scott and Tina and Kate and Izzie. It was a beautiful little zoo with lovingly crafted habitats and I think I had more fun than the little ones. Here’s a few photos…

Roses and Chocolate

This morning I stepped out from our kitchen onto the covered patio and was greeted by the wild scent of roses. Apparently the breeze was blowing exactly the right way and our bushes, heavy with just-opened buds, were showing us what they could do. As if that odor wasn’t heavenly enough, I walked back inside into the smell of hot-on-the-griddle cocoa pancakes and simmering chocolate sauce.

Some mornings should have an endless-repeat button.

What Makes a House a Home?

As I nest deeply this winter, I’ve been thinking: What makes a house a home?

We know a home when we’re in one. It feels lived-in and personalized. The decor may not be what we would choose for ourselves, but there’s something indefinably idiosyncratic about the place. No identifiable designer’s footprint. And it’s much more than just a shelter or place of residence.

What makes your home “home” to you?
